GOOT: A DIY Remedy for Cold & Flu Season
As we settle into the season of sniffles, coughs, and colds, I wanted to share one of my favorite homemade remedies that I rely on for boosting immunity and tackling symptoms head-on—Garlic Oil Ointment Treatment, better known as GOOT. This powerful natural remedy is easy to make with only three ingredients, yet it packs a punch against a range of seasonal ailments like colds, flu, and even RSV.
What Makes GOOT So Effective?
GOOT harnesses the natural properties of garlic, a plant well-known for its potent medicinal benefits. Garlic is more than a cooking staple; it’s a powerful tool for wellness with strong antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and antiseptic properties. By turning garlic into a topical treatment, we can use it to support the immune system and relieve various symptoms without needing to ingest anything—perfect for children or those who may be sensitive to strong flavors.
Benefits of Garlic in GOOT
Garlic isn’t just for spicing up dinner—it’s a tried-and-true ingredient for natural wellness. Let’s break down what makes garlic such a star in this simple yet effective remedy.
-
Antibiotic and Antiviral Properties
Garlic contains allicin, a powerful compound released when garlic is chopped or crushed. Allicin is known to help combat bacteria, viruses, and even some fungi, making garlic a valuable tool during cold and flu season. -
Immune System Support
Garlic doesn’t just target germs; it also supports the body’s natural defenses. By promoting a balanced immune response, garlic may help reduce the severity and duration of colds and respiratory illnesses. -
Respiratory Support
When applied topically, garlic’s properties can help ease respiratory symptoms, such as a stubborn cough or congestion. GOOT works as a gentle alternative to traditional vapor rubs, with the added benefit of natural ingredients. -
Antifungal and Antiseptic Benefits
Garlic’s antifungal and antiseptic properties make it helpful for addressing minor skin issues like rashes, warts, or ringworm. Applied in the form of GOOT, garlic can gently soothe and support healing.
Additional Ingredient Benefits
GOOT’s effectiveness comes not only from garlic but also from its carefully chosen carrier oils:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Almond Oil
These oils dilute the intensity of garlic while preserving its potency. Olive oil also has its own mild antibacterial properties and provides deep hydration to the skin.
Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil
Coconut oil brings its own antibacterial and antiviral properties to the mix, making it an ideal partner for garlic. It also helps the ointment solidify when refrigerated, making GOOT easy to use.
How to Make GOOT
Creating your own batch of GOOT is straightforward and doesn’t require any fancy tools.
GOOT Recipe:
- ½ bulb of raw garlic, finely chopped
- ¼ cup + 1tbsp of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil or almond oil
- ½ cup of cold-pressed coconut oil (softened)
Directions:
- Prepare the Garlic: Finely chop the garlic to release its active compounds. For best results, let it sit for about 10 minutes before adding it to the mixture.
- Combine Ingredients: In a blender, food processor, or similar appliance, blend the garlic with olive (or almond) oil and softened coconut oil until smooth.
-
Alternate Method
If you don’t have a food processor you can melt the coconut oil gently (using a double boiler or warm water bath) and combine it with the finely chopped garlic and olive/almond oil directly in a jar. Secure the lid and shake well to mix everything together. - Important Tip: As the mixture cools and begins to solidify in the fridge, give the jar a shake every 10–15 minutes for the first hour to ensure the garlic stays evenly distributed throughout the GOOT.
- Store the Mixture: Pour the blended mixture into a mason jar and store it in the fridge. The coconut oil will firm up, creating an easy-to-use ointment.
How to Use GOOT
There are several ways to incorporate GOOT into your natural wellness routine. Here are some practical uses:
For Deep Coughs
Apply GOOT to the chest as you would with a traditional vapor rub. The garlic’s antimicrobial properties can help to fight infection while the warmth of the oil provides comfort.
Immune Support
Rub a small amount on the bottoms of the feet and cover with socks. This method is especially gentle, making it ideal for children or sensitive skin.
For Skin Issues
GOOT can be applied to skin rashes, warts, or ringworm due to its antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Throat and Lymph Nodes
When illnesses are going around, applying GOOT to the throat and lymph nodes may help the body fight off infections more effectively.
Inside the Nostrils
A small dab of GOOT on the inside of each nostril can help combat a runny nose or nasal congestion.
Alternative to Vicks Vapor Rub
GOOT is a natural substitute for commercial vapor rubs, providing similar benefits but without synthetic ingredients or additives.
Safety Tips for Using GOOT
For Infants
When using GOOT on infants, I personally only recommend applying it to the bottoms of their feet, avoiding the chest and inside the nostrils.
Patch Test
If you’re trying GOOT for the first time, it’s always a good idea to do a small patch test on your skin to ensure there’s no reaction.
In a season filled with colds and flu, GOOT can be a simple, natural way to support wellness for the whole family. Whether you’re using it for general immune support or to soothe a pesky cough, this DIY remedy may quickly become a staple in your natural medicine cabinet.
